Despite the title of this blog, I do occasionally write about Windows and particularly Windows 7 which is so much less like the secretive inaccessible Windows of old.

Here’s a link that allows you to change the Windows 7 logon screen background. I have to say that the link looked very dodgy at first and I was quite suspicious. But, I’ve tried it and it works fine without any problems that I have come across.

However, the link provided in the post where I first saw the file didn’t work for me. It always, over more than 24 hours, gave me a “Bandwidth limit exceeded” error.

But, this link worked fine for me. As with many dodgy sites (not saying that this one is, but it does display some characteristics that MIGHT be construed as dodgy) the actual DOWNLOAD link is not clearly indicated. But, to save you the need to worry about this, here’s the download link

I love the VLC media-player and use it on all my computers and OSes.

Now, finally, VLC is available as a free app for the iPad, although not yet for the iPhone or iPod Touch. This Lifehacker post describes how to use it which is not at all difficult. Other than the ease of use of VLC, a further advantage for me is that I will no longer have to convert .avi movies to .m4v to get them to play on the iPad. Unfortunately, this means I may no longer have to use the excellent AirVideo again. #vlc

I like the new Gmail Priority Inbox feature that appeared some days ago. However, I was disappointed that I didn’t have access to this feature on my iPod Touch.

Well, here’s a simple way to get around this. I set it up on my Atomic Web Browser and it works perfectly. Of course, I’d prefer if it were available in the Mail app but it’s not for the moment.

Also, as you’ll see in the link, this hack doesn’t allow you to assign the Important label to mail. You still need your desktop/laptop for this.

Yes, perhaps the title is a little negative but it really seems like artificiality has become the new reality. Nevertheless, there are some really great tutorials here and all (or as many as I’ve read) are very well presented.

Just found out about Google Chrome Canary from this post.

It’s quite amazing that not only is there a development version of this browser called Chromium but there’s also a super-bleeding-edge version called Canary.

Only available right now for Windows but still tried it out in Windows 7. Seems very fast — could get to like this.

What’s that picture?

This is part of a painting called The Hunters by dutch painter Pieter Bruegel from about 1560. I love this guy's work and those of his other family members. They provide a real opportunity to go back in time and participate in life 500 years ago in north-western Europe.
