If you want to sell your used HD, you’d be wise to make sure nothing is retrievable from it.

Here’s a useful Lifehacker article on this topic which is definitely worth a read.

This little web app allows you to quickly search for whatever you want and, if available, either download or just listen. Don’t know how successful your searches are likely be but all of the three songs I searched for (Beatles, Neil Young and Djavan) all were found almost immediately. So looks good.

Actually, it’s not a password recovery but the option to set a new password without having to type your old (or forgotten) one although you will be asked for the root password before the root shell becomes available to use.

Very convenient indeed if you have memory problems. Problem is, though, that it might also be convenient for anyone who want to get into your Ubuntu partition as long as they know the root password of your machine. Not good!

Here’s the article and it’s very simple. Just boot into recovery mode, type the root password, then type “passwd <yourusername>” and then add whatever you want your new password to be (twice). And, that’s it.

What’s that picture?

This is part of a painting called The Hunters by dutch painter Pieter Bruegel from about 1560. I love this guy's work and those of his other family members. They provide a real opportunity to go back in time and participate in life 500 years ago in north-western Europe.
